PETER MURPHY ARTISTS STATEMENT
“My work is influenced by the great spiritual painting of the past. My working techniques are derived from the methods used by the great Byzantine iconographers and trecento Italian masters, such as Simone Martini. I paint in egg tempera on panel; my work is also often ornately gilded and decorated. I love the flat bright colour quality that tempera has and the way that it interacts with burnished and punched gilding. Paintings on panel like this often have a sculptural quality and real physical totemic presence that can cross the boundary between painting and sculpture.
Recently, I have been painting, in the in the style and format of traditional icons and altarpieces, images of my musical heroes, such as John Lennon, Elvis and Jimi Hendrix. These images strive to synthesise my love of medieval religious painting and psychedelic poster art and music of the 1960,s. I am seeking to create a new iconic tradition for the latter day saints of Rock and Roll who were seekers after truth, peace, and tolerance. All you need is love as somebody somewhere once said.”
